All trains on this route are overnight sleepers departing Hanoi Train Station (No. 7 Tran Quy Cap Street) in the evening and arriving at Lao Cai station early the next morning. Prices below are per berth in a shared deluxe cabin.

How the overnight journey works
There is no railway station in Sapa itself. The train runs to Lao Cai, and the last stretch to Sapa town is by road.

Check in at Hanoi Train Station
Arrive at No. 7 Tran Quy Cap Street about one hour before departure. Your e-ticket voucher is exchanged for a paper ticket here – the train will not let you board without it.

Board and settle into your cabin
Departures run between 21:30 and 22:00. Cabins are wood-panelled and air-conditioned with reading lights, bedding, luggage space and a welcome drink or snack on most trains.

Sleep through the ride
The ride takes roughly 8 hours. Toilets are at the end of each carriage; Chapa Express also has a hot shower on board.

Lao Cai to Sapa town
You arrive in Lao Cai at 05:30 – 06:05. Sapa town is about 30 – 40 km further, roughly one hour by shuttle bus or taxi, arriving in time for breakfast.

No mountain roads
The railway follows the Red River valley instead of the winding pass, so it is the best choice if you get car sick.
A flat bed, not a seat
Every ticket is a sleeping berth with bedding, so you actually arrive rested.

Leave Hanoi at 22:00 and start your Sapa day at breakfast time without paying for a room.
Freedom to move
You can walk the corridor, use the toilet any time and stretch your legs – impossible on a sleeper bus.
Pro tip
If you are two people, compare the price of two shared berths against booking a whole 4-berth cabin. On ET – Pumpkin, King and Orient Express the private cabin often costs only a little more and you get the compartment to yourselves. Book 3 – 7 days ahead in high season (September to November and public holidays) – sleeper cabins sell out well before departure.

Booking and travel tips
- Arrive one hour early. Your online voucher must be swapped for a paper ticket at the station counter before boarding.
- Plan the Lao Cai transfer. Shuttle buses and taxis wait outside the station from around 05:30. Add it to your booking in advance if you would rather not negotiate at dawn.
- Eat before you board. Tickets include drinks and light snacks only – no meals are served on any of these trains.
- Pack a warm layer in your day bag. Sapa runs 15 – 20°C cooler than Hanoi and mornings at 06:00 are cold, especially November to February.
- Lower berths cost the same. Request a lower berth when you book if you want easier access and somewhere to sit up.
- Check the cancellation window. Most operators refund in full up to 10 – 30 days out, then charge 30 – 100% closer to departure.
- Victoria Express does not run on Saturdays. Pick another train if your trip starts on a Saturday night.
